Kim grew up in Washington DC, USA and attended university in Paris. After earning an MA in Contemplative Psychology from Naropa University, she spent 15 years as an expat, teaching and leading retreats at luxury resorts throughout SE Asia and Western Europe. She started painting seriously while in (Mysore) India, and discovered the encaustic medium when she moved back to the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Her work was recognized by Shumei International, a worldwide arts organization, and is represented in private collections around the world. Her work was recently invited into the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She divides her time between Crestone and Denver, Colorado, with yearly visits to Thailand.
Art is a refuge - a sacred, secret place to step out of conceptual mind and into direct experience. Museums are like places of worship, or sources of nourishment. Having spent much of my adult life in Asia, I’ve seen how art connects us to each other in a way that transcends culture. Living in a foreign country reinforces universal themes of what it means to be human, and also presents a unique view into our differences. Art brings me back to what I feel is true. Concepts are finite and static; art is infinite and fluid. It mirrors consciousness and invites a dialogue with a larger understanding of the world. Both artist and viewer/experiencer are transformed in the interaction. Relationship is born. My hope is to convey how art is a bridge to this experience of mind that connects us with something larger than ourselves, and encourages us to realize that we are not alone. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche identified a trend he called "spiritual materialism" that is characterized by a conceptual understanding of spirituality, rather than a direct experience as the basis for a spiritual path. I believe that an authentic creative process mirrors spiritual development and provides the medium for this direct experience to occur. Exploring color, form, images and ideas as they present to us, we mine the unconscious for treasures inherent in a moment of being fully awake. My intention is to spark this experience through the visual image. When the thinking mind is allowed to rest through contemplating form and color, an experience of the primordial arises. Habitual patterns are cut, making way for new perspectives. Though I have been painting my entire life, discovering encaustics, changed everything. I was hooked by the versatile nature of the medium. I work in Denver, but my home base is Crestone, Colorado.
