Chien Thang Quach was born in 1994 and raised in the countryside of Ba Vi – Hanoi. Oil painting is a material that he especially loves and chooses as his main medium. Coming from a rural area, the landscape of his hometown is the main subject of his composition in addition to highland children or peaceful streets. He chooses impressionism to express his works because he finds freedom, comfort and freedom in terms of both expression and style. He always aspires to discover the mysteries of oil paint and find peace in the hustle and bustle of modern society. Through his works, he wants to convey to domestic and foreign viewers the most exquisite elements of the homeland and people of Vietnam. Chien Thang Quach's interview (06/2021)
What is your personal journey from your childhood until now?
From a young age, I exhibited himself to be a very gifted with painting, constantly drawing passionately and diligently, kindling and cherishing the dream of being able to become a real painter in the future. I often asked my mother to buy me color boxes and notebooks so I could paint whatever I wanted. When I was young, due to my family's misconception about painting, I was forced to give up my passion, but it took me 7 years after standing on the threshold of university which is directly related to my work later on. The painting spirit stroke me and I decided to start studying drawing, this time it was to learn basic drawing for the university entrance exam, but at that time the school I chose was Hanoi University of Architecture, which was also considered difficult stepping stone into painting. Following that, choosing interior design to study was also a mistake and after quite some time, I realized and decided to drop out of university to learn about painting and oil painting myself, this was the most difficult thing that I had to go through.
After equipping myself with the basic knowledge of painting and using materials, I also had a lot of luck when I received big projects for hotels and resorts that brought good money. Pursuing my passion and now receiving the support of my family, that is a great advantage and joy for me personally.
My road to painting was not smooth, but full of twists and turns.
Why did you choose to become an artist and what does it take to become one?
As shared above, I have art spirit, especially painting, so the decision to become an artist comes natural, to achieve that dream, I had to work very hard. Days and nights tinkering, studying and training to become what I am today.
To go on the path of painting, in my opinion, first, one must have a heart, always be responsible for his works and for collectors. Second, one must have a passion, a desire to express themselves and choose the right painting path that one is suitable for.
What are the main challenges Vietnamese artists are facing?
The biggest challenge Vietnamese painters are facing is that the world painting sky is too large, but Vietnam's painting industry is many centuries behind, so our knowledge of painting is still limited, we must try very hard to be able to compete with world painting.
There are very few art exhibitions in Vietnam and art is under regulation. What is your strategy to exhibit your work, enhance your awareness and sell your artworks?
Regarding the product promotion and exhibition strategy, the first thing I do is to improve the quality of my products, then I have to find and chart my own path. When looking at the work, you will know that the painting was painted by Quach Chien Thang. When a certain quality is achieved, I will participate in exhibitions, at first, it will be group exhibitions to be able to introduce people to my paintings, and the sale of works will be done on websites, exhibitions and established relationships.
You recently decided to join Silapix.com and the Silapix Art Rotation Program developed by Art Consulting Asia. What is the added-value of these new concepts and what benefits do you think Vietnamese artists will withdraw from?
The Silapix Art Rotation is a platform that connects Vietnamese artworks to businesses and collectors, including foreign businesses and collectors, which in my opinion is a great advantage of this platform, such a connection provides an opportunity for the Vietnamese artist community to introduce to domestic and foreign businesses and collectors, increasing brand value and increasing pricing for the Vietnamese artist community.
Who are the top 5 artists (domestic or international, deceased or alive) having the most influence on your work?
The five artists who have the most influence on my artistic path are:
- Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
- Nguyen Dinh Dang
- Thomas Kinkade
- Peder Mork Monsted
- Vladimir Volegov
