Narrative

The four artists selected for this first Art Rotation at Le Meridien Saigon dedicate their work to a genre called "Abstract". Strictly speaking, the word abstract means to separate or withdraw something from something else. Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead use shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. This way, abstract art is created by numerous of artists since it does not require any particular education in fine art, but emotional skills. The term can be applied to art that is based an object, figure or landscape, where forms have been simplified or schematised. Abstract art is often seen as carrying a moral dimension, in that it can be seen to stand for virtues such as order, purity, simplicity and spirituality. Since the early 1900s, after the artistic revolution initiated by the French impressionist movement, abstract art has formed a central stream of modern and contemporary art.

Khanh Hoang Dang

Khanh was born and raised in Hue city. His path to painting is self-study and tutoring from his father who is also an artist. Most of his artworks are abstract made with oil and acrylic. Because of his deep and respectful passion for Nature, his creations tend to employ vibrant and fresh colors. Khanh has had a number of solo and group exhibitions, and attended composing camps organized by art centers. His artworks are featured in the collections of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts and other private collections. As well as doing creativity work, Khanh also run two businesses, Gallery Chieu E and Secret Studio, and works as an assistant at New Space Arts Foundation. He currently Iives and work in Hue city.

Hung Ngo Thanh

Hung is an artist currently living and working in Da Nang city, a lecturer at Da Nang University of Architecture, specializing in oil paintings, acrylic paintings and synthetic lacquer materials. His works includes urban paintings and inner emotions research that express his own emotions in the expressive abstract world of human life in modern times related to urbanization, modernization, the openness, constraint, stifling urban life. Hung has his works displayed in yearly exhibitions such as The Annual Art Exhibition in the South East Region and the Central Highlands. Along with his personal works, he also often gets commissions for creating decorative paintings and providing art consultancy for hotels, restaurants, houses and other art-related projects. He graduated from the University of Art, Hue University of Arts in 2006. Since 2007 he has become a lecturer at Da Nang University of Architecture until now. From 2010 to 2012, he graduated with master's degree in visual arts from Mahasarakham University, Thailand.

Manh Ngo

Manh was born and raised in Nghe An province, Vietnam. With his love for art, he studied at Hue College of the Arts. He mainly uses oil, lacquer and acrylic as media to create his works of art. He paints according to his feelings without following any particular strategy. Manh picks his ideas into a variety of themes and combines many different genres to express the beauty of the subject or content he wants to depict. Abstract remains his favorite genre because according to him, the abstract universe is unlimited. Manh has participated in Hue Festival Street Art projects in the period from 2006 to 2012. He also participated in the conservation and restoration of interior design and technical training at Ta Vu project in Hue Palace, Vietnam from 11/2012 to 7/2013. Along with his personal works, he also has accepted commissions from hotels, restaurants and bars, such as Vanda and New Oriental hotels in Da Nang. In 2014 he was one of the Sun's group painters who worked on stone modelling. Manh graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Hue College of Arts. He is currently curating his own gallery in Nghe An province.

Nhat Tran Huu

Nhat is a contemporary artist based in Hue, Vietnam. He specializes in Painting, Installation Art and Video Art. He likes working with acrylic, oil and synthetic media to create both abstract minimalist and abstract expressionist works of art. His art journey explores his own inner realm, releasing the joy and the sadness of the world; also the tragedy of the times or strange signals from the void and from the harsh pressure of modern life. Nhat exhibits both at his hometown and abroad and has received many prestigious sponsorships and awards including Vermont Scholarship, USA in 2006; Artist residency at Hasla, Seoul, Korea (2012); First prize for the Art Contest "President Ho Chi Minh in the composition of Hue visual artists", Ho Chi Minh Museum, Hue, Vietnam (2018). Furthermore, Nhat has appeared two times in the finale of the Dogma Self-Portrait Awards (2012 and 2015) and one time in the finale of the "Korea under the eyes of a Vietnamese artist" Award at TTVH Korea, Hanoi, Vietnam (2015). He was also awarded the 5th prize at "Ancient Art and Literature" in Hue, Vietnam (2012) and the 4th Best Young Author at "Literature and Arts of the Old Capital" in Hue, Vietnam (2007). Nhat's paintings have been collected by public institutions in Vietnam: Hue Cultural Museum, Ho Chi Minh Museum, Hue Museum of Fine Arts; international art centers: Fong Ya Gallery (Taiwan) and Art Vermont Center (USA); and private collectors: Thomas (Germany), Wei Kue (Taiwan), Hans (Netherlands) and Anjinsan (Singapore). Along with his personal works, Nhat regularly receives commission works for hotels, headquarters, and Hue landscape painting collectors. Nhat graduated from Hue University of Arts, Vietnam, with Bachelor of Fine Arts. He is currently living and working at Nhat Art Studio, Hue and one of the ten Vietnamese contemporary artists selected to participate to the Black Project Group (Curator Wei Kue) in Taiwan.
